The familiar story of the Magi is a study in contrasts, contrasts between the three (perhaps) kings from the East, the maniacal king Herod, and the newborn king, the Christ child. Consumed by a desire to hang onto his throne, Herod would become infamous for his Slaughter of the Innocents. Consumed by a desire to worship the true king, the Magi would become beloved ancestors for all those “strangers” who have made their pilgrimage back to their true spiritual home.
