Wounded Warriors Provide A Live History Lesson

Celebrating our Wounded Warriors

Last Friday, October 16th, fifty Wounded Warriors from the Birmingham area and around the Southeast participated in a 13 mile bike ride in the downtown Birmingham area. Their journey began and ended at Independent Presbyterian Church on Highland Avenue. Our students and teachers made patriotic artwork to wave, along with flags, as the bikers returned to IPC. What a great experience for our children to see men and women who protect us and to thank them. The bikers shared high-fives with them as they rode back into the parking lot; it was not only a moving scene, but quite a celebration! We are not sure who the bigger celebrities were; the bikers thought it was the children and the children and teachers were sure it was the veterans.

And if that wasn't exciting enough, one of the soldiers had a service dog with him! He was wonderful to explain what the dog does for him and let the children visit with dog. It was a great day we will remember forever!

Happy 100th Birthday Independent Presbyterian Church

What an amazing day in the life of Independent Presbyterian Church which was founded in October, 1915. We are a century old! Services actually were first held at Temple Emanu-El before the church facilities were built in our current location. Just as we have been involved in social justice and serving the community from those early days, we continue "Loving God, Loving Neighbor."

We would love to have you join us in celebrating our "Second Century Service" on Sunday, October 25th at 10:00 a.m. at the Alabama Theatre. "It is, after all, not the origin of a beautiful sanctuary (which came a decade later), but rather the dawn of a fellowship of believers we commemorate -- people willing to go where God leads, even into the streets and theaters of downtown Birmingham." (Barry DeLozier, Centennial Committee Chairman)

The Alabama Theatre is located at 1817 3rd Avenue North, 35203. Street parking is available and there are free reserved parking spots in the McWant Science Center parking deck. Childcare will be provided at IPC from 9:00 a.m. to noon through the covered entrance on 31st Street. Please come celebrate with us and any other Sunday as we move from our first century into our second century, "Forward in Faith."
