Red, White, and Blue Frozen Yogurt Bark

Frozen Yogurt Bark is a healthy snack or dessert and is really fun to have your kids make. I have put a July 4th spin on it with my toppings, but you can add all sorts of other things to the yogurt. I actually think you could probably mix all the ingredients in a bowl first and make popsicles, but the bark is so pretty and the colors stand out so well.

INGREDIENTS:
Greek yogurt - if unsweetened, add some honey
Blueberries
Strawberries
Granola

INSTRUCTIONS:
Get out a rimmed baking sheet.
Line with parchment paper. (I learned a great tip for helping the parchment paper stay in place on the pan - after tearing a piece from the box, ball it up and open a few times. Then smooth it out and place on your pan and voila! it stays put. Each child could take a turn - good hand strength building.)
Spread the yogurt all over the pan. Thicker is better.
Add your fruit and granola.

Place in the freezer. Mine took about 3 hours to freeze solid.
Remove from freezer and either break apart or cut apart with a knife.

Enjoy!
Return any leftover pieces to the freezer in an airtight container.

OTHER TOPPINGS (which would all be yummy!):
chocolate chips
caramel chips
M and M's
Dried cranberries
Coconut
Nuts

Create Your Own Obstacle Courses

Obstacle Courses provide hours of fun and physical activity and they can be created inside or outside by adults or children. Parents could make an obstacle course outside and surprise their children or families could work together to make a course everyone can enjoy. Remember the obstacles must be doable for the youngest member of your family. Number one is to find a safe place to make your course. Moving between or through obstacles can involve running, hopping, jumping, crawling, crab walking, holding a ball between your knees and even singing while you do it! The only limit is your imagination. The courses can be run over and over and timed if you want to add this element. To keep the competition down, have each person continue to try to beat their own best time.

Outside Obstacle Course Materials Ideas:
hula hoops - to jump in and out of
hoses - to make circles or lines to hop through and over
wading pool - to jump in and out of
large card board box - to crawl through
inner tubes - to hop in and out
ropes - to lay out paths or hop over
chairs - to quickly sit in or run zigzagging between several
yard sticks or pieces of wood - to walk and balance on
pool noodles - made into circles with tape, made into half circles to slither through or arranged upright to run around and through

Indoor Obstacle Course Materials Ideas:
pillows - to climb over
balls - to hold between knees walking from one point to another
broom - can be used with 2 chairs to crawl under
chairs - sit down and quickly get up
small objects  - to zigzag between
hula hoop - jump in and out of
yard stick - jump over
pool noodles - jump over

Turtles

Turtles are such interesting creatures to watch. They enjoy the summer much as we do - enjoying the sun and taking a dip in the water! Children are always fascinated with the turtle's ability to pull their head in underneath their bodies for protection. The sea turtles' treks onto the beach to lay eggs in the sand and then leave the eggs to hatch and the baby turtles to follow the moon to find their way back to the ocean is fascinating.

One of my favorite Dr. Seuss stories growing up was Yertle the Turtle. It begins "On the far-away Island of Sala-ma-Sond, Yertle the Turtle was king of the pond," and ends with "And the turtles, of course....all the turtles are free, As turtles, and, maybe, all creatures should be." A great lesson after a great adventure.

Other turtle stories to check out:
Charlie the Brave Little Turtle by Mary Lu Stary
Good Night Little Turtle by David Cuncliffe
The Classic Treasury of Aesop's Fables by Aesop
The Box Turtle by Vanessa Roeder
Little Turtle by First Friends
One Tiny Turtle by Nicola Davies
Truman by Jean Reidy
The Foolish Tortoise by Eric Carle and Richard Buckley
I'll Follow the Moon by Stephanie Lisa Tara
Turtle Splash! Countdown at the Pond by Cathryn Falwell
Mossy by Jan Brett

For preschoolers and older children who want to learn more about turtles, the The Brave Turtle  is used on this You Tube video to teach about turtles.

Here is an easy TURTLE CRAFT to create turtles your children can use for creative play:
  • An adult should cut an egg carton apart so each cup is separated. These will be the turtle shells.
  • Paint each "hump" green or any color you want!
  • Add a pom pom for a head.
  • Use a small square piece of paper  to cut the underside and legs.
  •
  • Glue the turtle body to the leg piece to finish your turtle.
  •

Julie Andrews' New Podcast for Kids - Julie's Library

Who doesn't love Mary Poppins? I hope during our Safer-at-Home time, you will watch this classic movie with your children. Who wouldn't want Mary Poppins as their nanny? All of us agree she brought pure happiness along with some rules to the Banks family - the perfect combination.

Perhaps we cannot have our own Mary Poppins, but we can let her read to our children now. Julie Andrews has created Julie's Library, a podcast for kids. She and her writer and educator daughter, Emma Watson Hamilton, read some of their favorite books aloud. They post a new book reading each week. A sweet Day School mom gave me a great tip:  Before actually listening to the reading, look ahead at the book that is being read and, if you do not have that particular book, either do a curbside library pick-up or order on Amazon or Barnes and Noble . Once it comes, then listen and look at the pages. They do a follow up "Picture this: More from the Illustrator" for each book, including simple instructions for children to draw pictures similar to those in the particular book. They also give lots of other book suggestions if your child really loved the one read.

Check out the first episode of the podcast, a reading of Michelle Knudsen's book, Marilyn's Monster, right here.

To find the other books read weekly since the launch of the site, scroll to the bottom and click on "Episodes."

All in all this is a really great "Spoonful of Sugar!"

Hungry Caterpillars

EVERYONE LOVES ERIC CARLE!
One of Eric Carle's best loved books is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Many children can "read" this book long before they can actually read because of the colorful illustrations and repetition.

This special book lends itself to some great follow up art, eating activities, and discussions of the cycle of a butterfly.

Your child can make his/her own caterpillar out of a cardboard egg carton:
  • An adult needs to cut apart a cardboard egg carton. The length can be all 6 sections of one side.

  • The child can paint the caterpillar any colors they want!
  • Add eyes with paint, markers, or google eyes.
  • Add antenna with a pipe cleaner, a twist tie, or a thin piece from the leftover carton by poking holes in the head and weaving the antenna through them.

Another way to make a larger caterpillar is to let your child either paint with a brush or finger-paint several small round paper plates. If you want to keep in Eric Carle's still, you could also let your child tear  or cut pieces of wrapping tissue paper - all different colors or the same color - and glue them on to cover the plates.  One plate will need to be decorated as the head. Antenna can either be painted on or something attached to make them 3-D. Then you connect them with staples or twist ties, and voila, you have a caterpillar!

What fun to take the foods in the book and decide to buy or make them throughout the week to eat, just like the caterpillar. Obviously, some of them are inedible for us, so skip or substitute for those. have the caterpillar your child created to join the table!

Be on the lookout not only for caterpillars but also butterflies. They are pretty easy to find with all the flowers blooming. Children love the story of how butterflies change from caterpillars into the beautiful creatures we call butterflies so be sure to talk about the process and what an amazing gift from God that is.
