Today, we are going to color with nature! With items from your yard, or your neighbor's yard WITH permission, or from your refrigerator. Leading up to Easter, I posted directions for dyeing Easter eggs with mixes from natural ingredients from your kitchen, but this process uses nature directly rubbed onto a piece of paper.
From my yard, I collected dark pink rose petals, purple hosta flowers, green lemon balm leaves, red-orange begonia leaves, yellow begonia leaves, and a homegrown blueberry (one of the few the birds didn't steal). You and your child can collect whatever you find colorful including different shades of green leaves and bark. You can also look in your refrigerator for fruits and vegetables that are hard enough to hold and "draw" with...butternut squash, spinach, beets but remember they stain everything. A word of warning - berries are messy but make good color! You may need to mush them and apply color with a paintbrush or q-tip.
This works best on a plain white piece of paper since the colors will be light as your child colors. The picture can be a scene or something specific or just a collage of the colors as the child rubs the different items onto the paper. This is especially good practice for those little fingers to pinch and hold onto something. Be sure to talk about color being pigment, what happens as they color, that some items "color" a different color, what does it feel like, and which items produced the lightest and darkest colors. There is no right or wrong, only discovery. This is pure science at its most fun!

Tic Tac Toe
Children love to play games and they learn a plethora of skills. They have to problem solve, think ahead and plan, count or match, take turns, get along with others, and be a good winner or loser - an endless list. The age of your child should dictate the games you teach them, but let them experience the joy of playing family games. These are memories that all of us have growing up and they are some of the best! Get out the Candyland, Go Fish cards, a Match game, Dominoes, UNO cards, and keep adding appropriate games as they catch on.
One easy game you can actually let them help make is a tic tac toe game from rocks and sticks, rocks for the game pieces and the sticks to delineate the 9 squares. Cheap and fun!
MATERIALS:
12 rocks
paint
markers
4 sticks

HOW TO:
Collect 12 smooth rocks each about the same size; wash them and let them dry.
Choose 2 colors, or bugs, or shapes, or letters (X or O, or kids' different initial) to paint on the rocks. Paint the rocks - Six of one, six of the other one.
Let the paint dry and then add any details with a Sharpie or markers.
Place the sticks to make the board, 2 vertically, and 2 horizontally.
I chose red lady bugs and yellow bees. I painted the solid colors first, then went back with a black Sharpie to draw the details.

Celebrate America's Birthday
The Fourth of July celebration brings families together under normal circumstances. This year may look different, but it should be comforting to think similar celebrations to yours are taking place all over the country on that very day. You probably already have many traditions, but here is a craft and a celebration idea if you are looking to add something to your children's day.
CRAFT - PAINTED FIREWORKS
Materials:
toilet paper roll(s)
red and blue tempera paint
glitter(optional)
white paper (you could use blue or red paper and substitute white paint for that color paint)
Instructions:
Either the adult can cut strips a third of the way up around toilet paper rolls, or you can draw the lines and your child can do it. This is actually great scissor practice because the cardboard will stay still and is easy to cut and the child is forced to cut "up."
Fold the strips outward to make the painting "tool."

Put the red and blue paint on a paper plate or make good use of a Chinese food take-out container lid!

Have your child press the toilet paper roll "tool" down in the paint and then press it down onto the paper. I put the two colors close enough I just used one toilet paper roll, but you could use two different containers and two different "tools."
Add glitter if you have some at home while the paint is wet. When it is dry, shake off the extra.
The sky is truly the limit!

CELEBRATION IDEA:
Gather streamers, balloons, pipe cleaners, glue, glitter, dried flowers, paper and crayons and anything else you can think of and let your children have a decorating contest for their scooters, tricycles and bicycles. Of course, you will come up with multiple awards so every child gets the Best Something....most colorful, funniest, craziest, most creative, most flowing!
Definitely, have a ride around your neighborhood to show off their creative handiwork and help us all remember to be thankful for the USA!

Red, White, and Blue Frozen Yogurt Bark
Frozen Yogurt Bark is a healthy snack or dessert and is really fun to have your kids make. I have put a July 4th spin on it with my toppings, but you can add all sorts of other things to the yogurt. I actually think you could probably mix all the ingredients in a bowl first and make popsicles, but the bark is so pretty and the colors stand out so well.
INGREDIENTS:
Greek yogurt - if unsweetened, add some honey
Blueberries
Strawberries
Granola

INSTRUCTIONS:
Get out a rimmed baking sheet.
Line with parchment paper. (I learned a great tip for helping the parchment paper stay in place on the pan - after tearing a piece from the box, ball it up and open a few times. Then smooth it out and place on your pan and voila! it stays put. Each child could take a turn - good hand strength building.)
Spread the yogurt all over the pan. Thicker is better.
Add your fruit and granola.

Place in the freezer. Mine took about 3 hours to freeze solid.
Remove from freezer and either break apart or cut apart with a knife.

Enjoy!
Return any leftover pieces to the freezer in an airtight container.
OTHER TOPPINGS (which would all be yummy!):
chocolate chips
caramel chips
M and M's
Dried cranberries
Coconut
Nuts

Create Your Own Obstacle Courses
Obstacle Courses provide hours of fun and physical activity and they can be created inside or outside by adults or children. Parents could make an obstacle course outside and surprise their children or families could work together to make a course everyone can enjoy. Remember the obstacles must be doable for the youngest member of your family. Number one is to find a safe place to make your course. Moving between or through obstacles can involve running, hopping, jumping, crawling, crab walking, holding a ball between your knees and even singing while you do it! The only limit is your imagination. The courses can be run over and over and timed if you want to add this element. To keep the competition down, have each person continue to try to beat their own best time.
Outside Obstacle Course Materials Ideas:
hula hoops - to jump in and out of
hoses - to make circles or lines to hop through and over
wading pool - to jump in and out of
large card board box - to crawl through
inner tubes - to hop in and out
ropes - to lay out paths or hop over
chairs - to quickly sit in or run zigzagging between several
yard sticks or pieces of wood - to walk and balance on
pool noodles - made into circles with tape, made into half circles to slither through or arranged upright to run around and through
Indoor Obstacle Course Materials Ideas:
pillows - to climb over
balls - to hold between knees walking from one point to another
broom - can be used with 2 chairs to crawl under
chairs - sit down and quickly get up
small objects - to zigzag between
hula hoop - jump in and out of
yard stick - jump over
pool noodles - jump over
